Director of Clinical Services
Position Summary:
The Director of Clinical Services provides leadership in the coordination and implementation of clinical services of the hospice and palliative programs. Is responsible for the development, direction, and administration of clinical staff. Works in collaboration with Compass Regional Hospice’s (Compass) medical director to evaluate, develop, implement, and direct all aspects of the clinical care model.
Reports to: The CEO. In the absence of the CEO, the Director of Clinical Services reports to the Chairperson of the Board of Directors.
Supervisory Responsibilities: This position is responsible for the direct supervision of the nurse practitioners, Clinical Managers for Homecare and the hospice center, Clinical Educator, Delegating Nurse, the Compliance and Quality Manager and after-hours nurses.
Responsibilities and Functions:
- Coordination of direct and indirect patient services provided by all clinical staff.
- Provides guidance and counseling to staff to assist them in improving all aspects of hospice and palliative care services. Assists clinicians in setting priorities in developing and establishing immediate and long-term therapeutic plans of care.
- Assist with the preparation and administration of the annual budget.
- Assists with hiring, recruiting, and termination of personnel.
- Identifies need for clinical staff education and assists in planning and implementing yearly in-service and continuing education programs.
- Maintains and delegates the maintenance of electronic clinical records, statistics, reports, and records for purposes of evaluation and reporting of organization activities. Assures proper maintenance of medical records as prescribed and in compliance with local, state, and federal laws.
- Maintains or delegates the maintenance of adequate and appropriate inventory supplies for the provision of patient services.
- Evaluates organization’s performance via performance improvement program, productivity, quarterly and annual review assures for the quality and safe delivery of hospice services provided through the organization.
- Assures compliance with all local, state, and federal laws regarding licensure and certification of hospice personnel. Maintains compliance with Medicare Regulations and Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP) as appropriate.
- Promotes hospice care in the healthcare community. Maintains good standing in the medical community.
- Other duties as assigned by the CEO.
- Acts as a resource for billing/finance staff regarding clinical operations.
- Master’s degree in nursing, health administration or public health and a minimum of five years’ experience in direct clinical care required.
- Registered Nurse in the State of Maryland.
- Minimum of three years of hospice nursing experience with management experience, preferred.
- Minimum two years of leadership or supervisory experience, preferred.
- Able to cope with family emotional stress.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance and other community programs and resources
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively on an inter-disciplinary team.
- Excellent customer service philosophy and skills required.
- Demonstrated organizational and time management skills.
- Ability to lead teams in a fast-paced, emotionally sensitive environment.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and critical thinking skills
- Proficiency with EMR systems and Microsoft Office Suite
- Familiarity with HIPAA regulations and CMS audit processes
- Experience in a hospice or palliative care setting is highly desirable.
FLSA Status: This is a full-time position, classified as exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Schedule:
Monday – Friday 8:00am – 4:30pm - This is an on-site position.
Primarily office-based with periodic travel to patient homes or facilities
Must be available for rotating evening and weekend administrative on-call support
